FAQs About Dr. Peter Holmes
What Does It Mean to Be Double Board-Certified in Orthopedic Surgery and Sports Medicine?
Dr. Peter Holmes is double board-certified in orthopedic surgery and sports medicine.
Being double board-certified means that he has received high-level training and developed special skills in these two areas.
An orthopedic surgeon treats problems with bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, and muscles. The sports medicine field, on the other hand, focuses on preventing and treating sports injuries.
To become double board-certified, a doctor first completes an orthopedic surgery residency, which is intense training in that field. They then pass an exam administered by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery (ABOS).
After this, they undergo additional training in sports medicine, called a fellowship. Finally, they must pass another exam in sports medicine before they can receive their certification.
How Does One Become a Diplomat of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery?
Dr. Holmes is also a diplomat of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery. To become a diplomat of this organization, a doctor must follow several steps to demonstrate their skill and knowledge.
First, the doctor must earn a medical degree (MD or DO) from a recognized medical school. Dr. Holmes attended medical school at the University of Texas Health Science Center, Houston. Then, the doctor must complete a five-year residency program in orthopedic surgery.
Next, the doctor takes the ABOS certification exam, which has two parts: a written test and an oral test. The written test checks their knowledge of orthopedic surgery. The oral test checks how well they can apply their knowledge in real-life situations.
Passing both parts of the exam makes the doctor a board-certified orthopedic surgeon. They are then recognized as a Diplomat of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery.
How Does One Earn a Certificate in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine?
Dr. Holmes also stands out from other surgeons because he has earned a certificate in orthopaedic sports medicine.
After becoming a board-certified orthopedic surgeon, a doctor needs extra training to earn a certificate in orthopaedic sports medicine.
First, they must complete a sports medicine fellowship. The fellowship usually lasts one to two years. During this time, they learn to treat sports injuries and get hands-on experience with athletes. They also learn special surgical techniques for sports medicine.
After the fellowship, the doctor takes a subspecialty exam in orthopedic sports medicine. This exam is given by the ABOS. Passing it earns them a Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine and shows they have exceptional skills in this area.
