Dr. Holmes has practiced medicine in San Antonio since the 1980’s, specializing in orthopedic surgery, joint replacement, ligament repair and athletic injury prevention. Dr. Holmes, Diplomat of the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery with a sub-specialty Certificate in Orthopaedic Sports Medicine, specializes in orthopedic surgery and athletic medicine. This includes sports and occupational surgery. He has serviced not only adults and children but professional athletes as well. These have included the San Antonio Spurs, San Antonio Missions, San Antonio Iguanas and the Sea World Water Ski Team.

After completing his undergraduate education at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Dr. Holmes went on to earn a master’s degree in chemistry from Rensselaer.

He attended medical school at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston, where he also completed his surgical internship. Dr. Holmes then completed his residency training in orthopedic surgery at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.

Dr. Holmes became interested in medicine at a young age. “At the age of 14 – 15, I served in the Red Cross during the Vietnam War while living at Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines. Helping to take care of the wounded left a lasting impression,” he says.

He chose to specialize in orthopedics and sports medicine after he worked with the Astros and the Oilers while living in Houston. “Getting players back to the field in a safe manner started me in that direction,” he recalls.

Dr. Holmes’s care philosophy is to consider both conservative and surgical treatment options, developing an individualized care plan for each patient. “As I matured through my practice, I started giving increased consideration to nonoperative approaches to injuries. Not every rotator cuff tear needs surgery. Not every meniscus tear needs surgery,” he notes. “Many long-term studies continue to guide my care, and I always keep in mind that treatment decisions affect the patient and the patient’s family.”

He volunteers his time on weekends doctoring the Football games of both Schertz & Cibolo High School teams and has most recently volunteered as doc for the Crossman Drum and Bugle Band competitive team based in San Antonio.

Dr. Holmes is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons and specializes in orthopedics and sports medicine. He is the founder and president of the Orthopedic Kneed Foundation, a nonprofit organization dedicated to offering surgical and clinical orthopedic care to young athletes in need and other uninsured youth in the greater San Antonio region.
