Plantar Fasciitis San Antonio TXAlthough things like dancing and running are healthy ways to relieve stress and get your endorphins going, they can also cause health problems like plantar fasciitis. Causing a stabbing like sensation on the heel of the foot and up the leg, plantar fasciitis can make everyday actions like walking or standing to be painful. Luckily, with the help of the doctors at Sports, Occupational & Knee Surgery, you can get rid of your plantar fasciitis and start feeling like yourself once again. Read on to learn more.

What Causes Plantar Fasciitis?

Just like with any injury, exercise alone isn’t the only thing that will cause your plantar fasciitis. In fact, there are multiple things that contribute to getting this heel problem including:

  • Weight: If you are obese, the excess weight on your heels can cause plantar fasciitis.
  • Age: Plantar Fasciitis typically affects individuals over the age of 40.
  • Excessive Standing: If you work at a job where you stand all day long, you are more prone to develop this illness.
  • Foot Mechanics: Flat footed, a high arch, or an abnormal walking pattern can also contribute to you developing this heel problem.

How Is It Treated?

During your consultation with Sports, Occupational & Knee Surgery, one of our doctors will determine the cause of your plantar fasciitis. For example, if it is caused by excess weight or incorrect shoes, the problem is easy to solve. If it is caused by something like a sports injury or exercise, however, we may try a treatment plan that involves anti-inflammatory medication, taping, heel pads, night splints, physical therapy, and orthotics. If you don’t get any relief after two to three months, we can give you a cortisone or local anesthetic shot directly in your heel. During very rare instances surgery may be required.

If you get a sharp, shooting pain in the heel of your foot, you may have plantar fasciitis. With the help of the doctors at Sports, Occupational & Knee Surgery, you can start to feel like your old self once again. To learn more or to schedule an appointment, contact our offices today.
